Ramadan buffets must have Halal cert

Kuala Lumpur: Food premises and hotels promoting Ramadan buffet without a halal certificate can each face a fine of up to RM200,000. Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) Director-General Datuk Othman Mustapha said the use of any Islamic object, symbol or phrase implying that the food is halal by premises which had not obtained halal certification was a violation of the Trade Descriptions (Definition of Halal) Order 2011. "As such, food outlet or hotel operators who want to promote their Ramadan buffet are advised to adhere to the existing guidelines and regulations.

"Jakim views seriously the issue and would like to remind holders of Malaysian Halal Certificate to also strive to meet the certification standards from time to time," he said in a statement. He said food traders were also encouraged to refer to Islamic authorities, such as Jakim and state Islamic religious departments (Jain) before using 'halal' phrases to avoid possible issues.
