153 illegals held in Labuan op

Labuan: The National Security Council (MKN), Labuan police and other enforcement agencies rounded up 153 illegal immigrants in an integrated operation on this duty-free-island on Tuesday.Labuan Police Chief Supt. Adzhar Othman said the first raid started at 3am on Tuesday at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) commune in Kampung Muslim.

"We rounded up at least 30 Filipinos during the first operation involving various enforcement agencies and after screening, only 18 were detained, with three of them (one local) testing positive for drugs," he told a press conference here.

He said the illegal immigrants were detained under Section 6(1) © and Section 15 (1)© of the Immigration Act (Amendment) 2002 and Immigration regulations for illegal entry, overstaying and drug offences.

"A total of 1, 230 people including 471 women, 166 children from more than 360 houses were also screened.

There were no untoward incidents during the operation," he said.

Adzhar said the integrated operation was carried out by a total of 216 personnel from nine enforcement agencies namely the Police, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), National Security Council (MKN) Labuan and Sabah, Immigration Department, National Registration Department, National Anti-Drug Agency, Malaysian Civil Defense Department (JPAM), Labuan Corporation and Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA).

"It was a successful operation with the close cooperation from all the agencies. We will continue with this operation in the future to flush out illegal immigrants," he said.

The operation was also participated by government media agencies, namely Labuan Information Department led by Mohd Nazeeb Ali, crew of Radio Television Malaysia (RTM) Labuan and Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama).

MKN Labuan Assistant Secretary ASP Fauzi Ibrahim said the second operation concentrated at construction sites where a total of 120 people, including 10 women, were rounded up.

"The operation was a follow-up action to the Government's call to seriously resolve the illegal immigrant issue," he said, adding all the detainees would be sent to the Papar Detention Centre for deportation purposes.
