Reporter says hit and humiliated by man

Tawau: A reporter with a local newspaper here claimed she was traumatised after she was hit and humiliated by a man in his 50s who shouted at her and directed profanity at her on Monday.In the 6.30pm incident in front of her parents' house in Taman Green, Jalan Sin Onn, Christy Chok Lee Lui, (pic) 33, said her handphone was also damaged after it fell when the man, whom she knew, forcefully took it from her.

The man took the phone and put it in his pocket and only returned it after the victim pleaded for 30 minutes.

He was believed to have become angry after the victim took a photo of him after he hit her.

Prior to that, Chok said the man also pushed her father a few times and told the father not to get involved when the latter told the man to return Chok's phone.

"He hit me a few times using his arm and a roll of paper he was holding," she said during a press conference here, Tuesday.

Chok who holds a Masters' Degree in Multimedia Communication, also expressed her regret when the man insulted her profession as a reporter by calling journalism an uncivilised career.

She said she called the press conference because she was afraid for her safety and her family's and to ensure similar incidents do not happen again.

She admitted to have been traumatised by the incident and not being able to sleep the night before.

A police report had already been lodged on the same day.

Deliberating further on the incident, Chok said the man was believed to be involved in the construction of gates in their housing area and had gone to her parents' house on three occasions.

Meanwhile, Tawau Reporters Association (TRA) Secretary Tan Chin Cheng said he had attended the press conference in order to listen for himself the explanation from Chok regarding the incident.

"We are sad that this happened and we will bring the matter to the committee level before taking any further action," he said.
