Islamic poem and essay writing contests for Sabahans

Kota Kinabalu: The public and secondary school students are encouraged to participate in two competitions penning Islamic poems and writing essays that have Islamic elements.Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, Datuk Mohd Arifin Mohd Arif said both competitions are being organised for the first time in Sabah in conjunction with the upcoming Ramadan month and jubilee celebration of Umno Sabah.

He said Sabah Umno's Religion Bureau was sponsoring and organising the two competitions in cooperation with Badan Bahasa dan Sastera Sabah (BAHASA).

"I am calling all poets and writers not only in Sabah but in the whole country to take the opportunity and submit their poems for the national-level competition.

"While secondary students in the State are encouraged to send in their essays for the competition," he said.

Arifin who is also the bureau's chairman said this in a press conference at Wisma Muis here on Tuesday.

He said the participants are required to submit their poems and essays via email to [email protected] before June 20.

"The main objectives of organising these two competitions are to make us feel closer to the upcoming Ramadan month and its values as well as be the platform of literature that plays important roles in propagating Islamic values and teachings.

"This includes polishing the talent of students in writing and encouraging them to continue writing," Arifin said.

According to him, there are no entry forms and that all contestants need to do is to submit their poems and essays to the BAHASA President Jasni Matlani.

He said those students who wish to participate in the essay competition must also enclose a verification letter from their respective principals that they are students of the schools.

As for those submitting for the poem competition, Arifin said the contestants must make sure that their poems have never been published in any publications.

"Main winner of the writing poems will get RM1,500 followed by RM1,000 for second place and RM700 for third place as well as five consolation cash prizes of RM500.

"For the essay category, the main winner will get cash RM700 followed with RM500 for second place and RM300 for third place as well as five consolation prizes of RM200.

"In addition, all the winning poems and essays will be published as an anthology of Islamic poems and collection of essays that have Islamic elements by the Sabah Islamic Religious Affairs Department (Jheains) and BAHASA," Arifin said.

To a question, he said the winners of both competitions will be tentatively announced before the Hari Raya Aidil Fitri celebration.

He said the contestants are required to produce and submit their poems and essays in Bahasa Melayu.
