Cop charged with getting RM1,600 from 12 people

Kota Kinabalu: A 56-year-old policeman was charged with receiving a total of RM1,600 in bribes from 12 persons, in relation to a case he was investigating.Sergeant Abd Malek A. Bakar pleaded not guilty before Sessions Court Abu Bakar Manat to three counts against him on Tuesday.

On the first count, Abd Malek is accused of accepting a bribe of RM300 from one J.S Jollvin Boby Santong, a surety to one Van Brawin Santong who was arrested by police on Nov 6, 2015 and investigated under Section 6(1) of the Corrosive, Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958.

On the second count, he allegedly received another RM300 from one Dinah Gilong who was a surety to one Dio Romeo Liddoe who was also arrested and investigated under the same Act.

On the third count, Abd Malek allegedly accepted RM1,000 from Timothy Boriul, Riddius Mahau, Darddy Los, Lasrus @ Lazarus Sundaling, Nicholson Rayner A. Albert, Iverene Sungkoling, James Lee, Elsuaro K.D Somboton, Murhan Ambiki and Tommy Yutibing who were arrested and investigated under the same Act.

The charges stated that Abd Malek who was the Investigating Officer of the case at the time had received the bribes at the Manggatal police station and City Police Headquarters area on Nov 10 and 11, 2015.

The offence under Section 165 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to two years, or fine, or both, on conviction.

The court fixed June 22 for case management and released Abd Malek on a bail of RM10,000 with RM5,000 deposited in a local surety.

Prosecuting Officer Awang Shamsul Baharam Bongsu from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission appeared for the prosecution while Abd Malek was not represented.
