Kuala Lumpur: An unemployed man was sentenced to four months' jail and fined RM1,000 by the Magistrate Court here Tuesday for stealing a mobile phone worth RM800 at Low Yat Plaza last year. Magistrate Nur'Aminahtul Mardiah Md Nor handed down the sentenced to Shahrul Anuar Abdul Aziz, 23, after finding that the defence had failed to raise reasonable doubt at the end of the defence case.

She also ordered Shahrul Anuar to serve a month in jail if he failed to pay the fine. He paid the fine.

The court, however, allowed the Shahrul Anuar's lawyer Shaharudin Ali's application for a stay of execution of the jail sentence pending appeal.

Shahrul Anuar was charged with stealing the mobile phone from the Techasia Boutique, Low Yat Plaza, Bukit Bintang, at 4.47pm on July 11 last year.

The charge under Section 380 of the Penal Code carries a maximum jail term of 10 years and fine upon conviction.
