Jailed for bid to steal cable to buy diapers

Kota Kinabalu: A 31-year-old local, who confessed to trying to steal a cable from a housing construction site to sell and buy diapers for his children, was jailed six months and fined RM2,000 or two months' jail.Felix Mogunin, a labourer, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Cindy Mc Juce Balitus to attempting to steal a meter-long cable at 9.50am on May 18 at the Projek Perumahan Rakyat (PPR) Sri Keramat in Ketiau, Putatan.The court was told by the prosecution that Felix was caught by a worker of the site, who then contacted the engineer, one Muniyandy Subramaniam.

Muniyandy inspected the area and found about 16 metres of cable were missing and Felix, who was found having tell-tale tools with him, was then handed to police.Felix, who was not represented, requested for leniency, saying it was his first offence.When asked why he committed the offence, Felix said he needed to meet expenses such as buying diapers for his children.He was charged under Section 380/511 of the Penal Code.

In another case, 32-year-old man Nurdin Mohd Kasim, charged with threatening to injure his brother, was given a discharge not amounting to an acquittal.The court made the decision after the brother one Azmi Mohd Kasim, 24, confirmed to the court that he had lodged a police report to withdraw the case against Nurdin.
