Ipoh: A man believed to be the head of the 'Rem Sawit Gang' was shot dead by police on the Ipoh-Lahad Highway near Taman Lahad Indah about 13 kilometres from here, Monday night. Perak deputy police chief Datuk Hasnan Hassan said in the 9pm incident, police stumbled upon the suspect who was riding a motorcycle at the location.

On sensing police presence, the 24-year-old suspect suddenly fired two shots at policemen who tried to approach him.

"One of the suspect's shots hit the patrol car door. In their defence, police returned fire which hit suspect on the body," he told a media conference here today.

Hasnan said following the incident, police conducted two separate raids in Ipoh and Batu Gajah at about 2am to search for other gang members.

"In the operation, police apprehended two men, aged 26 and 33. Both the suspects and the dead man had various criminal records for drugs, murder and robbery," he said.

Hasnan said the 'Rem Sawit Gang' was active in carrying out robberies around Ipoh, Batu Gajah, Kampar and Tapah since early this year.

"In one case, the gang robbed the office of an oil palm collection centre and fled with about RM30,000," he said.

He said police were now tracking down several other members of the gang who were still at large. – Bernama
