More attention on Sulu Sea
Kuala Lumpur: Operational aspects of anti-piracy joint patrols in the Sulu Sea are being ironed out between Malaysia, the Philippines and Indonesia. This, along with the re-ignition of the claim over Sabah by Philippine President-elect Rodrigo Duterte, is set to draw more attention to the unsettled region.

Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein (pic), who disclosed this, said the Sulu Straits, an area already prone to piracy and abductions, needed to be monitored more closely.

"It is important because of what is transpiring in south Philippines, and the transition of power in the region means we have to monitor it very closely," he said.

Hishammuddin was speaking to reporters after addressing the 30th Asia-Pacific Roundtable discussion on "Cooperation and Contestation in a Changing Regional Landscape" organised by Institute of Strategic and International Studies Malaysia.

Speaking at the same roundtable on Monday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak had also taken a swipe at Duterte by telling him to resolve Philippine's long-running insurgency in its south.

Duterte's backing of the Sulu Sultanate's claim on Sabah has been rebuked by Wisma Putra.
