Bribe: DPP and friend to go on trial Aug

Kota Kinabalu: A 33-year-old former Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) and her friend charged with asking and accepting a bribe to drop a case against a couple will go trial from August this year.Sessions Court Judge Abu Bakar Manat fixed Aug 29-30, Sept 22-23, Oct 5-7 and Oct 19-21 for Kamalia Yahdi from Sarawak, and Chang Voon Kiat, 45, who maintained their innocence when their cases were brought up for case management on Monday.Abu Bakar also set Aug 29 for mention of the outcome from the DPP's office regarding the representation letter filed by the defence.

On the first count, Kamalia is accused of requesting RM50,000 from one Shang Yee Chew and Chang Fui Hsia as an inducement for her as a DPP to help withdraw an ongoing case which she was then handling in the Magistrate's Court in Tawau.The offence allegedly took place at 5pm on May 15, 2015 at the Café @ 7 in Promenade Hotel, Tawau.For the offence, she was charged under Section 16(a)(B) of the of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009 which provides for a jail term of up to 20 years and a fine of not less than five times the amount of bribe received or RM10,000, whichever is higher.Chang, the manager of a massage centre in Tawau, who acted as a middleman for Kamalia, allegedly asked for RM40,000 from Shang at 2.10pm on May 20, 2015 at the Kuhara Court Apartment, Tawau.

On the second count, Kamalia and Chang allegedly received a bribe of RM40,000 from Shang and Fui Hsia for the same purpose at the same place at 9pm on May 20, 2015.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.

About 31 prosecution witnesses are expected to be called during the hearing.
