Putra Jaya: A committee to create a healthy environment has been set up following an increase in the risk of numerous non-infectious diseases among Malaysians.Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam said the committee involving several ministries would be chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and the first meeting would be held on June 21.

"We will be making several proactive proposals to the committee to raise the quality of the people's health care which will involve the cooperation of other ministries," he said in a media briefing on the National Health and Morbidity Survey 2015 here, Monday.

It includes a proposal to cooperate with the Education Ministry and Parent-Teacher Association in food preparation for students by canteen operators, he said.

"We do not want food such as French fries and fried chicken to be served by canteen operators as they are easy to cook and popular among school children, he said.

Among the ministries involved are the Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Ministry as well as the Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Ministry.

In this regards, the survey showed 17.5 per cent or 3.5 million people aged 15 and above are diabetic.

"From the survey, it was also found one in three Malaysians or about 6.1 million people suffer from hypertension while 47.7 per cent or 9.6 million people have high cholesterol levels," he said.

Subramanian said the study also found those aged between 40 and 59 were most involved in physical activities compared to those in the younger or older groups.

"The trend in this age group was probably due to the signals of such diseases and on doctors' advice to start exercising.

Despite the government's efforts to raise the people's quality of health, health care is still the sole responsibility of the individual," he said. – Bernama
