THE government does not simply acquire agricultural land for infrastructure and industrial development, said Natural Resources and Environment Deputy Minister, Datuk Dr Ir Hamim Samuri."The move will affect the quantity of national food supply so the ministry does not encourage industry players to acquire and develop agricultural land (for other purposes)," he said when winding up the debate on the Land Acquisition (Amendment) Bill 2016 in the Dewan Negara Wednesday.

The Bill was passed after it was approved by a majority of the Senate through voice votes in the presence of Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Datuk Seri Abdul Halim Abd. Samad.

The amendment of the Bill, among others, emphasised on the importance of land acquisition for development, particularly infrastructure development to retain the country's competitiveness in heading towards a developed nation.

The amendment also covered underground work like building of tunnels, drainage systems and underground infrastructure.

Land acquisition for Malaysia's economic progress and for locality development however must meet stringent conditions so that the interests and welfare of the people were not affected.

For example acquisition of land for underground development must take into consideration technical aspects and safety of those living above before a project can be implemented. – Bernama
