Escaped convicted rapist caught

Tawau: Convicted rapist, Faizal Iman (pic) , has been caught, three days after he escaped from custody at the court here. The 36-year-old was nabbed by a Lahad Datu police team during a special operation at Division 5 Tamaco Plantation at about 1.45am on Friday. State Police Commissioner Datuk Abd Rashid Harun said a tip-off prompted a team from the Lahad Datu Criminal Investigations Department to arrest the man, from Kg. Aman Jaya Tagasan, Semporna.

"A handphone and a SIM card have been seized from the convicted man," he told a media conference at the police headquarters here, on Friday. Also present was the District Police Chief ACP Fadil Marsus and his senior officers. Rashid said a manhunt was mounted after information of his escape was received at about 5.40pm on Tuesday. The man was said to have escaped from police custody while being escorted to the lorry in the court compound to be sent to the Tawau Prisons.

Faizal was sentenced to 20 years in prison and 20 strokes of the cane for raping a 14-year-old girl between noon and 1.30pm at an oil palm estate in Kg. Aman Jaya, Semporna on June 2, this year. He may now face up to two years' jail or fine or both for his escape stunt.
