Three held for smuggling crabs

Tawau: Three men, including a 16-year-old teenager, have been detained by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) for allegedly smuggling RM12,000 worth of female mud crabs from Tarakan, Indonesia.Disclosing the case that happened last Tuesday, Tawau MMEA Director Maritime Captain Anor Jaafar said the suspects, aged between 16 and 20, were detained when riding a passenger boat in Tawau waters. Two of them failed to show personal identification documents and were believed to be Indonesians.

He said their boat was spotted by the MMEA during a routine patrol in the wee hours of the morning and when inspected, officers found 40 polystyrene boxes containing the female mud crabs. The suspects also failed to produce any valid documents for the cargo.According to Anor, initial investigation showed they were from Tarakan and were heading to Mile 3 to unload the cargo. "We confiscated the boat after we have identified that they had not been authorised by the National Security Council to transport aquatic resources from outside the country," he said, adding that the NSC has only given such authorisation to six companies.The case he said is being investigated under the Customs Act 1967 and Immigrations Act 1959/63.
