17 M'sians to receive grants for Fulbright programme

Kuala Lumpur: The Malaysian-American Commission on Educational Exchange (MACEE) presented grants to 17 Malaysians for the prestigious Fulbright programme and other United States (US) government-funded grants for 2016-2017, Tuesday.The Fulbright programme, the flagship international educational exchange programme sponsored by the United States government and designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries, was offered by MACEE since its inception in 1963 to promote international goodwill through the exchange of students and scholars in all areas of education, culture, and science.

An award winner, Tan Win Son received a Fulbright grant to the Arizona State University and will be leaving in August to study Big Data Science-Analytics.

"My goal is to understand more about leading practices of analytics professionals in the US and help to bring back some of it to help organisations here in Malaysia.

"I would like to improve our public transport system and risk management field, the implementations maybe almost immediately upon graduating, the sooner we collect the data in the right way, the sooner the implementation," he told reporters after the Fulbright award presentation ceremony here.

Another recipient, Dr Mohammad Faizal Ahmad Fauzi from the Multimedia University said, he intends to develop digital pathology, a non-popular field in Malaysia.

"My aim is to be a pioneer in this specific research area and we (Multimedia University) will find medical collaborators to work in this area in future," said Mohammad, a future Biomedical Informatics student in Ohio State University.

Meanwhile, Deputy Chief of Mission of the US Embassy, Edgard Kagan said the Fulbright programme was a greater platform for Malaysians to embark on a new journey in the education field.

"We consider this programme the most important thing to be done to expand knowledge and both Malaysia and America will benefit from this strong relationship," said Kagan.

In addition, for the first time, Fulbright-Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), a newly created grant was also introduced.

MCMC Academy's Advisor Toh Swee Hoe said it was jointly funded by MCMC and the US State Department and these grant was to send graduates and senior scholars to the US in the field of communications and mass media.

Three individuals were awarded Fulbright-MCMC grants at the event.
