Keeping alive Filipino traditions: PKS

Kota Kinabalu: Persatuan Kababayan Sabah (PKS) hopes to preserve traditional Filipino heritage among members while at the same time enhance their welfare."Sharing the blessings to the less fortunate people in our society deriving from fund raising projects and organising community services for the welfare and interest of everybody regardless of races, religion and affiliations will continue to our guiding torch," said its co-founder Badaruddin "Benjamin" Porle.

The first anniversary celebration last Saturday attended by some 500 people saw among others the traditional T'Boli Dance (an indigenous dance by people of South Cotabato) and a musical number entitled "Dahil Sa Isang BulakLak".

Members of PKS are Malaysian citizens whose ancestry originated from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao in the Philippines.

The association was officially registered with the Registrar of Society (ROS) in June 18, 2015.

Its ongoing membership drive continues to receive encouraging response statewide and has successfully established district working liaison committees in Kota Kinabalu, Sandakan, Lahad Datu, Tawau and Keningau in just 12 months.

Badaruddin also said the group would focus on the importance of achieving academic excellence and level-up the socio-economic status of members.

It is planning a mass blood donation campaign to commemorate Malaysia's Independence Day celebration on August 31.

PKS Keningau Chief Liaison officer Cherilyn Rondidas said Rumah Kanak-Kanak Bondulu Tobon, Tambunan, will receive a donation during the committee's fellowship night on July 23 at Juta Hotel in Keningau.

"We already officially invited our leader Datuk Sairin Karno to grace the occasion as well as other community leaders of Keningau," she added.

PKS executive committee members are Dato John Clark Sumugud (Founder/Adviser), Badaruddin (Co-founder) , Teddy Pacaldo (Chairman), Julius Porle (Vice-chairman), Marlene San Juan (Treasurer) and officers Roberto Magallanes, Moises Cabalce, Ricky Rosalia, Ridwan Abdullah, Alan Lagot, Pilarico Napatud, Arthur Enriquez, Junaidi Abdullah and Elmer Pacaldo.

The newly-formed district working committees are headed by Francisco Fiel (Kota Kinabalu), Theodolfo Rosalia Jr (Lahad Datu), Ben Carreon (Sandakan), Rizalee Ortiz (Tawau) and Cherilyn Rondidas (Keningau).
