Kota Kinabalu: The Barisan Nasional (BN) Government must not be complacent with the return of Chinese votes to the ruling coalition, said Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) chief publicity officer Albert Kok.He said despite the resounding victory in both Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar by-elections, the BN must never neglect the interest of the Chinese voters.

Kok stressed that the Government must be proactive and pragmatic in matters concerning the Chinese community and Chinese education to enhance the BN and State Government's credibility among Chinese voters, particularly in the recognition of Unified Examination Certificate (UEC).

"I believe the confidence and support of Sabahan Chinese voters for BN will increase significantly if the State Government grants recognition for UEC," he said.

In the same vein, Kok said the Government should also look into the lack of Chinese representation in government administration and enforcement agencies.

"The Government should lower the entry threshold for young Malaysian Chinese into the civil service," he added.

In relation to this, he proposed to the Government to adopt merit-based recruitment and quota system in its hiring practices to enable more Chinese to join and dedicate themselves to the public sector.

"The BN should address the needs of Chinese voters by taking their interest and welfare to heart," he urged.

He acknowledged, however, that the Kuala Kangsar and Sungai Besar by-elections have reflected the level of Chinese support for the ruling coalition.

"To regain more support from Chinese voters in the next General Election, BN should take the needs of Chinese voters into consideration when formulating policies and measures."
