Melaka: There are no plans to appoint special officers who are equivalent to political secretaries for assemblymen, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron. He said the proposal, however, would be considered when the state has the financial strength to afford the salaries.

"We will be able to execute the proposal if Malacca is able to become an international investment destination in the near future," he said when winding up the debate on the motion to amend the Appointment and Remuneration of Political Secretary Enactment 1981 which sought to amend the RM3,000 monthly salary of a political secretary to that to be determined by the executive council at the State Assembly.

Earlier, when debating on the motion, opposition leader Khoo Poay Tiong (DAP-Ayer Keroh) proposed that the government has a political secretary for every assemblyman in the state.

On another matter, the assembly learnt that the state recorded 1,002 dengue cases between Jan 1 and May 28 this year.

State Health, Sports Development and Drug Eradication committee chairman Datuk Ab Rahman Ab Karim said Melaka Tengah district recorded the highest number of cases at 679 followed by Jasin (167 cases) and Alor Gajah (156 cases).

"The government, jointly with the various agencies, is conducting various activities to curb the menace, including setting up "MyMat" mosquito traps at hot spots," he said when replying to Datuk Amiruddin Yusof (Barisan-Ayer Limau).

Ab Rahman noted that there was a drop to 2,420 cases statewide last year from 2,749 in 2014.

Meanwhile, Malacca Housing, Local Government and Environment committee chairman Datuk Ismail Othman said 114 business premises had been identified as repeated offenders active in illegal cyber gambling operations despite enforcement action being taken against them.

Replying to Lim Jak Wong (DAP-Bachang), he said at present illegal gambling operations rarely operated at the business premises and had moved to residential areas, with such activities now being manipulated through smart phone, laptop or tablet.
