Tawau: An Indonesian's plans to collect durians turned tragic when he was slashed by another who mistook him for an intruder and a thief at Kg Ranggu, Mile 9, Jalan Apas, on Wednesday. Deputy District Police Chief Supt Mustaffa Maarof Mustaffa identified the deceased as Omar, an Indonesian in his 30s without documents. A 39-year-old foreigner, who also had no documents, has since been detained to facilitate investigations under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.ADVERTISEMENT The incident took place when the man was walking past the front of a house to go to a farm located behind the premises at about 10pm. A dog started barking at him as he walked past and this caused the other man to think that a thief had intruded into his house compound, prompting him to confront the other. The man challenged the other by asking 'siapa' (who)…however the Indonesian only answered 'kenapa' (why) without identifying himself. Angered by the response, the man slashed the Indonesian with a 16-inche long machete, resulting in the latter collapsing. The man immediately returned to his house to take a bath before heading for the house of his employer who then took him to the police station. ADVERTISEMENT Mustaffa said early investigations showed the deceased suffered injuries to the neck, nearly decapitating him, and was reported to have died at the scene. The motive, he said, is caused by misunderstanding over the identity of the man who was initially mistaken as a thief and intruder.
