Hwong returned unopposed as STIA president

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Timber Industries Association's Datuk James Hwong has been returned unopposed as president of the association for the term 2016-2018. The office bearers for the term are YP Chua who will serve as deputy president, Joseph Fong as vice president, Stephen Chaw as secretary general and Fong Ming San as assistant secretary general and Nancy Chia as treasurer general and Raymond Chiew as assistant treasurer general. The new line-up also named 11 individuals as committee members. ADVERTISEMENT The committee also discussed the future of the timber industry in Sabah taking into consideration the many predicaments faced by the industry players. The association now has 220 members involved in various types of timber manufacturing activities. Based on 2015 statistics, the wood-based industry continues to strive on various challenges including adhering to international technical requirements for export wood products. Other matters discussed by committee members were on the Safety of Life at Seas (Solas) standard whereby the international maritime organisation has made it mandatory for container weight verification and in November 2014, the organisation also announced the adoption of Solas as a regulation. Malaysia will enforce Solas on July 1. Shippers must determine the method used for obtaining an accurate gross mass based on guidelines given by the Marine Department.
