Tawau: The current container handling rate at the Tawau Post is expected to improve significantly owing to a more efficient yard operations with the new Terex Fantuzzi Reach Stacker. The current container handling average rate is fourteen to seventeen moves per hour.

Sabah Ports Sdn Bhd (SPSB) chairman Datuk Karim Bujang said the equipment, commissioned by Terex Port Solutions, was purchased to improve container yard operations which in turn will boost the ports' container handling productivity.

He noted that the port handles almost 70,000 tonnes annually making it the leading handling port among the company's east coast ports.

He also hoped that the new addition would help address complaints such as inadequate equipment.

He said this during the handing over ceremony of the equipment at Tawau Port Thursday and to commemorate the latest edition of its fleet of machineries.

According to him, owing to the port's significant container volume, Sabah Ports Sdn Bhd sees the need to invest in strengthening its facilities to improve productivity.

The reach stacker was purchased at the cost of USD425,000 and Karim announced four new units of terminal tractors to come end of this year.

"We are expecting additional four new units of terminal tractors later in December. This investment is in line with our commitment to utilise RM1.3 billion for port upgrades within a 30-year span," he said.

The Terex Fantuzzi model is equipped with lifting capacity of 45 tonnes and able to stack up containers up to five rows high.

Also present were SPSB chief operating officer Mohd Sahid Nawab Khan, general manager Siti Noraishah Azizan and port manager Subardjoe Durasit.
