Man bruised, robbed by duo after seeking help
Kota Kinabalu: A businessman ended up bruised and robbed after he sought help from two strangers to lift the gate of his house in Taman Austral Kepayan, here. Four local men, aged between 22 and 29, have since been picked up in two separate raids, to facilitate investigations.

The four, including the mastermind, are said to be habitual criminals called Ajis Gang and are also believed to be responsible for two motorcycle theft cases reported in Kinarut and Penampang.

The incident unfolded when the 36-year-old businessman returned from a shop nearby at about 1.30am on June 8.

As he drove to his house, the car suddenly jerked forward and hit the gate due to the car handbrake which malfunctioned, prompting the man to alight from the vehicle and tried to lift the gate himself.

The man called out to two men who were walking past his house and asked if they could help him lift the gate.

After they assisted him, one of the men asked if he could borrow the businessman's handphone, but the businessman did not give him the handphone.

Instead, he offered to dial the number as the other read it out. That was when the other man suddenly punched the businessman and hit him with an iron rod while demanding that he hand over his money. The duo grabbed the man's handphone and car keys from his trouser pockets before fleeing in his car when he fell to the ground.

City Police Chief ACP M. Chandra said the businessman's Isuzu trooper was found abandoned at the roadside along Jalan Bantayan in Inanam at about 8.10am the same day.

Further investigations led to the arrest of the four men who were picked up in two separate raids.

The first was on June 10 when police raided a house in Jalan Kibabaig in Penampang at about 2.15am and arrested three men.

Two have been identified as a 26-year-old Kadazan and a 34-year-old Kadazan, both unemployed, and with previous criminal convictions, while the third is a 27-year-old Sino Kadazan with no previous records.

Their arrests led police to raid another house in Kg Tatahan , Jalan Kionsom, in Inanam, at about 7am on June 17.

A 29-year-old unemployed Dusun man, also a habitual criminal and believed to be the mastermind, was nabbed.

Several items, including motorcycles and handphones amounting to RM30,000 were seized.

The group is said to go around on motorcycles, targeting houses with no occupants as well as unsuspecting victims, including those intoxicated just for the fun of it as well as for their daily expenses.

Police advise people to be wary when seeking assistance from strangers and to alert police should they come across any suspicious characters.
