Kota Kinabalu: Cellular signal in Kampung Podus in the interior of Kota Belud is not always reliable. However, luck was on Errvent Ensoi's side on March 21. "It was already close to midnight when my phone buzzed — it was a text message from Petronas, saying that I've been offered an education sponsorship," he said.

Errvent, 18, who scored 9As and 2Bs in last year's Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia examination, said he could not wait until the following day to break the news to his parents.

"I woke up my mother and told her about it. It was indeed great news to all of us."

Under the sponsorship, the former student of SMK Tandek in Kota Marudu was offered to pursue Mechanical Engineering at Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) in Tronoh, Perak.

The eldest of two siblings, Errvent hopes that his achievement would inspire his sister, now in Form Four, to work hard and do well in her studies too.

"I'm excited and all fired up – I can't wait to begin life as a university student at UTP," he said.

In 2014 Errvent represented his school in the inaugural "Petronas All About Youth" Programme (Petronas AAY) — aimed, among others, at nurturing talents and leadership skills of secondary school students through project implementation in the areas of education, community well-being and environment.

"I used to be a shy and introvert person," he said.

"Being part of the Petronas AAY team trained me to step up to the challenge of giving a presentation in front of a panel of judges, and audience."

The programme, he said, had helped him step out of his shell and boosted his confidence level to take on new tasks and challenges – something that would definitely come in handy as a student at UTP.

Errvent is among the 40 outstanding SPM school leavers from Sabah awarded the Petronas scholarship this year.

The Petronas Education Sponsorship Award Ceremony took place on June 9 in Kota Kinabalu, and was graced by Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Masidi Manjun, representing Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Musa Hj Aman.

Recipients of the Petronas Education Sponsorship Programme (PESP) will pursue their tertiary studies majoring in chemical engineering, petroleum engineering, mechanical engineering, geophysics, finance, law, and other industry-related courses at UTP as well at universities in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada.

Under the PESP, Petronas will support the students beginning from foundation studies up to the completion of their first bachelor degree.

Since its inception in 1975, PESP has benefited close to 35,800 students nationwide with an estimated investment value of more than RM3 billion.
