SAINT-ÉTIENNE: Poland became the first team to book their place in the quarter-finals of Euro 2016 courtesy of a 5-4 penalty shootout victory over Switzerland in their round of 16 match on Saturday. The match went to a penalty shootout after the regulation 90 minutes saw both sides tied 1-1 and extra time also failed to determine the winner.

Poland began far the brighter of the two sides and could have gone in front within a minute but Arkadiusz Milik drove an effort high over the bar after Yann Sommer had been forced into a mistake by Robert Lewandowski.

The Swiss struggled to get a foothold in the game with Haris Seferovic starved of service and fell behind six minutes before the break when Jakub Blaszczykowski found himself on the end of a flowing counter attack and slotted home.

Switzerland returned from the break with the bit between their teeth but it did not appear to be their day when Lukasz Fabianski produced a stunning save to tip Ricardo Rodriguez's effort over the bar.

The Swansea goalkeeper was in inspired form but was eventually beaten by a stunning individual strike by Xherdan Shaqiri.

The Stoke City man flung himself into the air and unleashed a gorgeous overhead kick from the edge of the penalty area, which cannoned in off the inside of the post.

The strike was enough to take the game into extra time, but Arsenal signing Granit Xhaka missed the only penalty of the shootout as Poland won.

Poland now play the winners of the Croatia-Portugal match in the quarter-finals on Thursday.
