Unity league veteran football tourney

Kota Kinabalu: Football teams throughout Sabah and Labuan are urged to take part in the Sabah Unity League Veteran Football tournament which is set to kick off next month at the Penampang Stadium.The annual tournament in its sixth season is organised by the Penampang Unity Football club (PUFC) with the cooperation of the Penampang Sport Complex and Sabah Football Association (Safa).

Organising chairman Edwin Jomiji said the competition received overwhelming participation from teams in both the mixed veteran and the super veteran categories.

"So far we have 25 teams in the mixed veterans and 16 in the super veterans.

" We are targeting 32 teams in the mixed veteran category and 20 teams in the super veteran category and no more participation will be entertained once the target is reach."

He said the tournament will be played based on the world cup format but with a slight modification, and there will be a two league competitions namely the Unity league and the Fairplay league.

In both veteran categories, each team will be drawn in a group where the top two teams will qualify to play in the second round or quarter final of the Unity league whereas the third and fourth team will qualify to play in the second round or quarter final of the Fairplay league.

"This will give more chances for teams to play in the second round quarter final and there are total cash prizes of more than RM40,000 in the competitions."

The closing date of the tournament is on July 6 (Wednesday) and the managers' meeting is on July 10 (Sunday) at 1 pm at the Penampang Sport Complex conference room.

All team managers and representatives to attend for the managers meeting as there will be briefing on the new Fifa ruling by the referee.

Opening ceremony will be officiated by Penampang District Officer Luvita Koisun on July 17 at the Penampang stadium at 3pm.
