SERDANG: An early morning explosion caused by a hand grenade left eight people wounded at the Movida nightclub at IOI Boulevard Puchong Tuesday.Some two dozen patrons were at the outlet when the explosion occurred outside the place at about 2.30am, sending them scurrying for safety."The incident happened when the victims were watching a football match at the premises.

Selangor deputy police chief DCP Datuk Abdul Rahim Jaafar quashed speculation that the explosion was linked to terrorism, adding that police believe a turf war among gangs is behind the attack."Initial investigations revealed that the suspect or suspects tossed the hand grenade at the nightclub, injuring four men and four women," he said.
Abdul Rahim said police are scrutinising closed-circuit television camera footage around the area for clues.The case is being investigated for attempted murder under Section 307 of the Penal Code.

The injured are being treated at Serdang Hospital and Sunway Medical Centre. One of the victims, a local man, is believed to be seriously injured.Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said police are probing the motive behind the incident.

Federal police's Special Branch Counter-Terrorism Division (SB-CTD) principal assistant director Datuk Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said the incident is being investigated from all angles. He did not discount the possibility that it could have been a terrorism act. Ayob was also asked on a Facebook post purportedly by a Malaysian Islamic State member, who claimed that the attack was carried out by the group's members in Malaysia. Ayob said the claim has yet to be verified.
