Kota Kinabalu: A lack of British Pound Sterling in the market has seen those who came looking to buy often having to leave with less than they hoped for."There were some people who came to look for Pounds but we don't have any stock at the moment," said a staff at a Gaya Money Changer Sdn Bhd foreign exchange booth in Wisma Merdeka, here.

When asked how many people showed up, she said wasn't quite sure but that they were Sabahans, adding that most just came to survey the exchange rate and ask questions.

Another staff at NBL Sdn Bhd Foreign Exchange said there were some people who came to inquire about the last few days but most of the time they just surveyed the exchange rate.

"They are comparing the various exchange rates looking for a better deal. We are out of stock at the moment but those who came looking for Pounds were locals.

"They probably intend to buy based on news the Pound value has dropped because they may have children studying overseas or are interested to travel overseas as UK is a popular destination to travel to for Sabahans."

Another staff at Milirich Sdn Bhd Money Services Business said they have some Pounds available but the amount was limited.

"We had a customer today who came but the person exchanged only 50 Pounds worth," she said.

When asked if there were a lot of customers looking for Pounds, she said did not notice it.

"Just a few people every day looking for Pounds. Most of our customers at the moment are Chinese tourists holidaying in Sabah who are exchanging their Renminbi."

Staff at Focurek Services Sdn Bhd said that there were people who came to exchange their currency for Pounds with them.

"Yes we have some Pounds available, but many who asked were not buying but surveying the rate only. "

Staff at Travellers, another foreign exchange booth in Wisma Merdeka said they were out of Pounds since last week.

"Sorry but no Pounds. Finished," they said, adding that they were not sure when will they receive any supply of the Pound.

Another foreign exchange booth in Wisma Merdeka who wished to remain anonymous said they did not have any Pounds although there were some customers who came asking.

"Not many tourists from England have come to exchange their Pounds for the Ringgit. Besides not many UK tourists here, their summer holidays have not started," said a staff who wished only to be identified as Cheng.

When asked if they could get Pounds within the next few days, she said they can place an order for Pounds from a currency wholesaler but it seems at the moment even the wholesaler is out of stock.
