RM60,000 cheating: T'gganu woman to enter defence

Kota Kinabalu: A 50-year-old woman from Terengganu was ordered to enter her defence on two charges of cheating two men of RM60,000.High Court Deputy Registrar Melissa Chia Pui Fung, who sat as a Sessions Court judge, made the order on Wan Norai Wan Ismail after ruling that the prosecution had established a prima facie case against Wan on Wednesday.

Chia fixed Aug 24-25, this year for Wan's defence.

On the first count, Wan is accused of cheating one Jidon @ Adrian Janaun, 41, into believing that she could carry out construction work on a bungalow, as a result of which she was given a cheque for RM30,000.

She allegedly committed the offence together with an accomplice still at large at 9.45pm on April 14, 2014 at the Maybank branch in Karamunsing, here.

On the second count, Wan is accused of cheating another man, one Chong Yen Mi, 56, over the same matter and received a cheque for RM30,000 at 9.47pm the same day and place. The offence under Section 420 of the Penal Code provides for a jail term of between one and 10 years, and whipping and fine, on conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Hafizah Zahidah Abdullah, who stood in for DPP Akmazatul Mohamed Nawi, conducted the prosecution while Wan was represented by counsel Dato Seri Rakhbir Singh.

Meanwhile, in another court, a 33-year-old Sarawakian was charged with committing criminal breach of trust.

Lai Boon Lim pleaded not guilty before Sessions Court Judge Noor Hafizah Mohd Salim to the charge against him.

He is accused of breaching the trust given to him as a salesman of Super Top Wholesale to collect RM44,941.17 in sales from 14 customers but using it instead. Lai allegedly committed the offence at the company premises in Taman Suria, Jalan Penampang Baru at 9am between February and June this year.

The court set July 28 for case management and released Lai on a bail of RM10,000 with RM5,000 deposited in two local sureties.

DPP Dinesh Raja appeared for the prosecution while counsel Cedric Choo defended Lai.
