Bank robberies: Police to meet guard companies

Kota Kinabalu: Police will soon be calling all security guard companies in Sabah to have a two-way communication with them to enhance awareness and look for a holistic approach to prevent robberies in bank premises.State Police Commissioner Datuk Abdul Rashid Harun said this would also include improving the standard operating procedures (SOP) among the companies as well as looking into all aspects that could enhance security levels at premises that are being guarded.He said such measures will be implemented following two robberies involving the use of explosives at automated teller machines (ATMs) in Putatan on June 24 and in Membakut on May 11.ADVERTISEMENT "We will call all the security guard companies in Sabah and have meetings with their management so that we could look into their respective SOPs and maybe consider streamlining them to improve their security system."This aim of this is to enhance security levels and discuss possible approaches and methods that could prevent robberies and explosions at ATMs like what had happened in Putatan and Membakut," he said.Abdul Rashid said this to reporters when attending an Al-Quran recital and breaking of fast with police officers and personnel at Nur Islam Mosque at the Sabah police headquarters in Kepayan here on Tuesday night.He also presented Ramadan and Syawal contributions to orphans, Muslim converts and single mothers ahead of the upcoming Raya celebration.ADVERTISEMENT On developments in the Putatan ATM robbery case, Abdul Rashid said police are still investigating and any new leads on the case would be made known soon.At the same time, he called on the public to channel any information in regards to the two robbery cases on the bank ATMs here and Membakut.

It was reported that five masked men blasted two ATMs at a bank in Putatan before making off with two safes containing RM254,550 at 4.20am last Friday.In Membakut, it was reported that more than two men used explosives to break open one ATM and fled with RM70,000 on May 11.
