Putatan: Police will be focusing on 30 accident-prone road stretches in the State during the 14-day Ops Selamat in anticipation of a higher than usual traffic flow during the festive season.Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Abdul Rashid Harun said the 30 black spots involved 11 roads in the West Coast, 11 in the East Coast, two in the interior, two in Labuan and three in the northern region."Last year, during the Hari Raya holiday season, we recorded a total of 764 accident cases, of which nine were fatal and saw a total of 12 deaths. In comparison, in 2014, the number of accidents was 733, of which 19 were fatal and there were 24 deaths.ADVERTISEMENT "That means last year we saw a reduction of about 50 per cent in terms of fatal accidents and number of deaths. And I am proud that because of the close collaborations between all parties involved in Ops Selamat last year, we managed to reduce the number significantly," he said.Rashid said this after flagging off the ninth phase of this year's Ops Selamat at the launching ceremony held at Tanjung Dumpil, here, Wednesday. He added that the operation, which started on June 29 and will end on July 13, will focus on ensuring the comfort of road users during the Balik Kampung rush, to reduce the number of fatal accidents and with it, the number of deaths.ADVERTISEMENT "The operation's main objectives are to ensure the reduction of accidents and deaths, smooth traffic flow and to conduct integrated crime prevention through patrols and spot checks."We want to show the omnipresence of police in certain locations not only to monitor traffic but also to ensure that no road users are flouting the law," he said.

He reminded drivers to be extra cautious on the road and to be tolerant to other drivers. The focus, he said, should not be on reducing the number of deaths only but also to prevent instances of sufferings and tears of their families."This is why we always say, remember those you love. If you are sleepy, the only way to alleviate that is to stop in a safe place and sleep it off. Don't stop for coffee or roll down the windows. Those do not help."Sleepiness is the main culprit for the majority of road accidents," he said.In the meantime, he said marine police will also be deployed to keep the State's waters safe during this season.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.
