Amputee makes off with a woman's handphone

Kota Kinabalu: Disability was certainly no hindrance for an amputee who made off with a woman's handphone in broad daylight near Kg Rampayan, Jalan UMS, Manggatal, here, Monday. The 20-year-old paperless Suluk, whose right hand had been amputated, was picked up the same day to facilitate investigations. The drama unfolded when the 24-year-old Sino Kadazan woman boarded a passenger van to go to work at a shopping mall in the city centre at about 12.18pm and not long after that, a man also boarded the same van. ADVERTISEMENT The man alighted from the van at about 12.30pm and proceeded to the front of the vehicle to pay his fare. The woman, who sat on the front passenger seat next to the driver, was busy on her handphone when the man suddenly grabbed the gadget from her hands and fled.The woman, who worked as an assistant supervisor, shouted for help prompting one passenger in the van to give chase.City Police Chief ACP M. Chandra said two policemen on motorcycle patrol also arrived at the scene moments after being alerted of the incident. ADVERTISEMENT The man who was seen fleeing towards the hills in Kg Rampayan was subsequently apprehended by a team of four policemen from the Alam Mesra police station. Chandra said investigations showed that the man is unemployed and did he have any criminal record.
