Tawau: A total of 2,548 people were detained in the 434 integrated operations coordinated by the Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) from January to May in the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (Esszone). Esscom Chief Executive Officer Noor Alam Khan A. Wahid Khan said the figure is part of the 31,350 people screened during the integrated operations which involved numerous security and enforcement agencies.

These included the police, armed forces, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, Immigration Department, National Registration Department, Forestry Department, Customs and District Council.

He said Sandakan recorded the highest arrests with a total of 1,449 people followed by Tawau and Kunak with 446 and 185 people, respectively.

Noor Alam said they were detained for either having no valid identification documents or dubious documents.

"Esscom will continue its effort to rid Sabah of illegal immigrants. "We will improve on the integrated operations implementation concept to ensure better impact and reduce the number of illegals, particularly in the east coast," he said.

He said Esscom will make slight improvements this year, namely in each integrated operation which will from now be led by the district police chief, assisted by the Immigration Department as well as district councils and monitored by Esscom.

He said this during the launching of the Esscom programme together with the community in conjunction with the fasting month held at Masjid Al-Hidayah Kg. Kinabutan Laut, Mile 4, Jalan Apas here, on Thursday.

Also present were Esscom Deputy Commander Brigadier-General Dr Mohd Kenai Basiron, Chief of Staff Brigadier-General Tuan Roslan Tuan Ismail, Special Task Chief of Staff SAC Md. Rusli Md. Junus, District Police Chief ACP Fadhil Marsus and Village Chief Abdul Sih.

Noor Alam said the integrated operation will focus on locations suspected to be hideouts for illegal immigrants such as workers' quarters in plantations and estates, construction sites, squatter settlements and water villages.

"I hope village chiefs and village security and development committees (JKKK) will give their full cooperation to Esscom and the special teams appointed to lead the integrated operation," he said.
