Keningau: Assistant Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Datuk Sairin Karno wants farmers to intensify farming activities to generate more income following the entry of the Giant Hypermarket to the district. He said its entry spelled good economic development as well job opportunities for those in the rural areas.

"Farmers must work hard and not abandon their farms to make an income," he said during the launching of the hypermarket's outlet on Thursday.

Also present were District Officer Yusop Osman and heads of Federal and State departments and community leaders.

More than 8,000 people attended the event.

Meanwhile, Yusop, in his address, hoped more corporate companies both local and abroad will invest in the district, saying that the presence of Giant in the district was a result of growing business potentials in the district.

He said investors have tapped into oil palm, rubber, vegetable, fruits and coffee bean cultivation, adding that there are also five plywood manufacturers operating here.

Yusop noted the district also has 50,000 acres of oil palm plantations, six palm oil mills, as well 200,000 acres of rubber estate.
