Dept to enforce smoking ban on Labuan ferries

Labuan: The Labuan Health Department is drawing up strategic and effective plans on health and educational campaign, calling for smoke-free roll-on roll-off (ro-ro) ferries.The estimated three-month long programme will aggressively be carried out at public places and for stakeholders on the island, soon.Its Director Dr Ismail Ali said a preliminary meeting had been held with ferry operators, as the enforcement of the smoking ban on ferries must not be implemented drastically.

"The banning of smoking on ferries had long been gazetted, and now, we are trying to fully enforce it with the consent of ferry operators and stakeholders through a series of discussions," he said at 'Balik Kampung' Health Campaign for Hari Raya 2016 at the Labuan Ferry Terminal, here, Friday.Dr Ismail said ferry operators and crew must understand and be fully aware of the risks involved in smoking onboard the ferry.He said the department's health promotion unit would be promoting educational and awareness campaigns to members of the public."It may take a little bit of time, but it is our objective to see the implementation (the smoking ban on ferries).

What is more important is that the campaign on banning smoking on ferries must be carried out aggressively, as we want to avoid objection in the future."So, when we carry out enforcement, members of the public, especially travellers, will be aware of the ban.
