Appreciate books on Sabah: Ex-CM
Kota Kinabalu: Good books are great heritage for mankind. Sabahans are all over the world and the perfect gift for them to appreciate in nostalgia is a collector's book as many of them still pine for Sabah which is in North Borneo, yearning to return.Former Chief Minister Tan Sri Chong Kah Kiat said this, Saturday, when officiating the launch of "North Borneo: A Collective History" at Hyatt Regency here. It was attended by more than a hundred people.

Urging the public to support such heritage literature, he said:

"North Borneo will also exist where Sabah is, and quality history books like this will still be around in a hundred years in spite of e-books. Look at the photographs of people of many races together in the past."

He said that was how North Borneo then was great in social harmony and cohesion, recalling his many personal memories of the bygone days of growing up and travelling in Sabah, and the photographs in the book help to bring back nostalgic recollections of the past.

"North Borneo: A Collective History" was edited by Dr Lim Pitt Kent, with contributions from Ross Ibbotson, A.V. M. Horton, Heidi Munan, Dr K. Ravi Mandalam, Liau Fah Onn, Jeffrey J. Wood, Bruce and Jean Blanche, Kevin R. Smith and William Wang.

At the book launch, Prof. Bruce Blanche gave a lecture on Borneo Airways Limited and Keningau author and historian Abednigo Chow Yau Shung presented a short aviation film clip of the plane carrying the Agong on his first flight visit to Keningau and Jesselton.

Only 450 copies were printed, priced at RM195. At its launch, 100 copies are offered for sale at RM130.

Publisher Datuk C. L. Chan of Opus Publications said he would not reprint the book in future, hence it will be a rare collector's issue of Sabah's North Borneo history.
