Tawau: The remains of a suspected murder victim was found at the beach in Mile 8 Kgt Tinagat, here, at about 1.30pm on Thursday. District Police Chief ACP Fadil Marsus said the victim was found with a red nylon string around the leg as well as a half-burnt car tyre, believed used to set the body on fire.

"The identity and gender of the victim is yet to be known … a swarm of flies hovered over the skeletal remains.

"It is difficult to establish the victim's gender as the body has decomposed into a skeletal state, no documents were found on the body or in the surrounding area," he said, Friday.

He said a police team from the Criminal Investigations Department together with the K9 Unit were at the scene after being alerted at 2.03pm.

Fadil said a witness told police that at about 6.30pm on Wednesday, he received a WhatsApp message from a friend who told him of the discovery of skeletal remains at the beach in the village.

The friend was on his way to visit a cemetery in conjunction with Hari Raya when he chanced upon the remains.

"The friend took a photo and sent it to the witness via WhatsApp, asking him about it since the witness stayed in the village.

"However, the witness decided to personally inspect the site the next afternoon, because it was getting dark and he stayed in Taman Semarak," said Fadil.

He said the witness walked along the coastal area to get to the location some 500 metres from the cemetery in Kg Tinagat at about 1.30pm on Thursday.

The witness immediately contacted police when he saw what looked like a human skull and a rib bone.

Fadil said the beach is flanked by mangrove, while the upper reaches are filled with bushes.

He said the remains were sent to the Tawau Hospital for post mortem to be done by a pathologist from the Queen Elizabeth Hospital on July 12.

"We have deployed the K9 Unit to assist investigations at the scene, we are also in the midst of inspecting missing person records," he said, adding that the case is being probed under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.
