Kota Kinabalu: Hotels in and around the city are generally enjoying a high occupancy not only because of the Hari Raya Aidil Fitri celebration and school break but also the increase in tourist arrivals during the current summer season in their respective countries.A random check by Daily Express showed some of the hotels were nearly fully booked until September.

"We're pretty much full because this is the summer season and many foreign tourists are travelling to our state," said Horizon Hotel's Communications Manager, Filzah Hilmi.

She said despite the hotel's high occupancy, it continues to receive enquiries from walk-in customers, including from people who are planning to stay with their family during the one-week school break. But considering the high demand for rooms in the hotel that is strategically located at the heart of the city, it may take a bit of luck to get any.

"We'd inform that that we need to double check in case there are last minute cancellations," she added.

Promenade Hotel has also been in high demand due to its convenient location.

"We have many foreign visitors who have made reservations at the moment," said its Marketing and Communications Manager Jesica Chong.

Location does not seem to be the pulling factor for Avangio Hotel which is out from the centre of the city during this period.

According to its sales manager Gloria Wong Chen Wen, it has hit 89 per cent occupancy during this period.

"They're mostly walk-in guests who come from other districts who stay with us with their families during the school break," she said.

The one-week school break started last Friday. Although people will only return to work on Friday, many have applied to extend their leave until Monday.

Some hotels reported to have an average occupancy so far and are looking forward to some last minute reservations before the peak period starts to subside.

"Based on our past experience, they're bound to be people coming to make reservations at the height of the festive period," said a spokesperson of Cititel Express Kota Kinabalu.
