Kuching: It was a quiet first day outing for the Sabah contingent as their martial arts exponents failed to win any medals at the Sukma Games in Sarawak on Tuesday.Mic Daniel Siaw competing in the poomsae event was the only taekwondo exponent taking to the floor in Kuching at the Petra Jaya Unity Stadium.

The 19-year-old only managed to accumulate 6.40 points from the judges and failed to advance to the finals.

In Kuching, where karate was being held at the Mini City Stadium, only one out of three Sabah representatives got past the preliminary rounds.

Einstein Junior Edward Justin in the male kata was the only one to make it to the semi-final stage where he eventually finished in fourth place.

Kumite exponent Reginald Axel Alexander competing in the male -55kg class was stopped in the second round while Ar Nikazmie Ahmad who is one of the three athletes that the State association hopes to deliver the gold medal lost his repechage fight in the men's -55kg class.

Meanwhile, in cycling, top State women rider Natasya Soon said she will try her best to defend her Sukma titles won in Perlis two years ago.

"I will do my best to defend the three titles even though MSN only set a two-gold target for me this year, " she said on Tuesday.

The 21-year-old won golds in the downhill, BMX as well as Cross Country (XC) in the previous meet but may find it hard to win all three this time around.

"I am confident of winning the downhill but the BMX I may have a 50-50 chance as the scenario this year is different.

Unlike in Perlis, the BMX class is more competitive this time.

"Anyway, I will give my best. I have been training under coach Stanley Jalip Jr and the training session mostly took place in Tamparuli.

"I competed in the Asian Championships in China in May but did not get any placing. Hopefully I will do well in this Sukma and get a national call up for next year's SEA Games."

Meanwhile the three cycling events will only be held from July 28-30 while the road races will start Wednesday with the 200m sprint.
