GEORGE TOWN: The owner of a condominium unit who allegedly collected rent from tenants on a daily basis has been slapped with a RM250 fine by the Penang Island City Council (MBPP).MBPP officers who went to the condo unit on the fourth floor of the seven-storey Halaman Pulau Tikus condominium found two occupants believed to be Indonesians inside the unit, but the owner was not in.

MBPP duly issued the summons under the 1991 MPPP bylaw for Trade, Business and Industries for the offence of operating a business without licence.

Tanjong MP Ng Wei Aik, who accompanied the officers, said the authorities had received reports on the illegal lodging house long ago and notices were issued to the owner but "he did not stop the business".

"We believe the man had started the business about five years ago in eight of the 28-unit single-storey block, which was built 21 years ago.

"The occupants of some of the housing units here had been paying individually to live there on daily basis.

"Last year, we issued a legal notice and the man reduced the number of units given for daily rental to five.

"It is not an offence to rent out the housing units to tenants on a long-term basis but renting it out on daily basis is illegal," he told reporters after the operation yesterday.
