Kota Kinabalu: Taking a leaf from former US President John F. Kennedy, newly-installed President of the Rotary Club of Kota Kinabalu (RCKK), Jeyan Marimuttu called on Rotarians to ask not what your (country) Club can do for you…but what you can do for your (country) Club."Jeyan, the 65th President, proposed a "Triple R" agenda, that is, Revisit, Reassess and Rehabilitate while calling for adoption of the "Triple C" Philosophy, that is, Commitment, Consistency and Continuation.

Outlining his Plan of Action, he said it will be addressed via a two-pronged strategy – to revisit as many, if not all, of the number of projects undertaken by the club over the years, and to embark on certain special projects that would be ongoing for some years.

"We have four special projects: Triple C – Cure Cataract Campaign, Back to School Programme, Rural Hostel and Garden City of Kota Kinabalu.

The Triple C project is in partnership with the State Health Department, particularly the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

So far three patients have been operated on and another nine are waiting for their turn.

"The Back to School Project started last year and will continue in partnership with Sime Darby under their corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme," he said.

According to Jeyan, the QEH Eye Department has been working very closely with RCKK and other Rotary Clubs in KK.

"This project is expected to continue over the next three to five years. We hope to visit as many kampungs as possible to undertake eye examination with our volunteer team of 'Cataract Finders' who had been trained by the Eye Department."

He said the proposed Rural Hostel project, also in partnership with Sime Darby, is in support of people in remote villages, zeroing in on expectant mothers to house them near clinics and hospitals pending their delivery.

On the Garden City of Kota Kinabalu, Jeyan expressed the club's desire to work with Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) in making KK a "Most Liveable City" in Malaysia.

"We will concentrate on anti-litering and creating awareness among the citizens, particularly the youth through our Interact Clubs in the schools."

Meanwhile, he paid tribute to all the 64 Past Presidents of RCKK by getting fellow Rotarians to drink a toast to them.

"Rotary Club of Kota Kinabalu is a very peculiar Rotary Club. You know it took me some 15 years as a Rotarian to get here. The queue is long and weary. But you will get there eventually," he said while thanking Past President Patrick Chin for bringing Rotary into his life and Past President Dr Richard Barrow for being his mentor.

Earlier, outgoing President Jack Ong (2015-2016) expressed his gratitude to Yayasan Sime Darby (YSD) for their sponsorship of RCKK's projects.

"RCKK have progressed well in increasing its engagement with YSD and I look forward to further collaboration with our partner," he said.

He gave credit to Datuk Adeline Leong for having convinced YSD to be the main sponsor of the Kota Kinabalu Jazz Festival, the club's major fund-raising event since 2012.

Other projects supported by YSD included the Year End Cheer goodies worth RM10,000 and given out to needy homes and shelters, construction of the Roof Shelter for the disabled at Bukit Harapan, the Back to School Project which provided RM100,000 worth of uniforms, shoes and bags for students of rural schools, and the building of rural hostels.
