Family has cat to thank for chasing away King Cobra
Kota Kinabalu: A family has its pet cat to thank for chasing away a King Cobra that wandered into the compound in Kg Ilabong, Limbawang, Beaufort, early Tuesday. The year-old pet named Lara, whose 36-year-old owner Sabrenna Sulin described as an active and loving cat, risked its life by confronting the three-metre long cobra that was later captured by personnel from the Beaufort Civil Defence Department led by Japar Yunus, about 27 minutes after midnight.

Houseowner Mohd Isa Junaidi recalled receiving a call from his sister next door who alerted them of the snake's presence at about 11.10pm.

"My family and I were asleep when I received her call, telling me not to go out because a huge snake was outside my house," said the 41-year-old technician at Beaufort Hospital.

"My sister said they saw Lara chasing a moving 'object' which turned out to be a King Cobra, prompting me to go to the upper level of the house to see out the window.

"I saw the snake, with its upper body raised as if ready to strike at Lara before it slithered to my fish pond about three-metres from my house after Lara stood her ground," he said.

He said a medium size cobra was captured by Fire and Rescue personnel in their house in 2007, but this was the first time a snake that size had wandered into their yard.

The house built on stilts is located near an oil palm estate and about 100 metres from the main road.

In February this year, a tom cat named Lato also saved his owners from danger when it confronted an 11-foot King Cobra which found its way into the family bedroom in Kg Tambalang Along 1, in the same district.

In January, a pangolin was captured by the Civil Defence Department at an elderly woman's house in Taman Monee, Kota Kinabalu.

The discovery was made thanks to her pet dogs who kept barking at a cupboard outside the woman's house where the pangolin was found rolled up into a ball.

All the pets including the reptiles were uninjured in the incidents.
