Kuching: Sabah finally broke their duck in Kuching on the fourth day of the 18th Sukma Games.Weightlifter Callixtus Daunis claimed the third gold for the contingent in the men's 56kg clean and jerk with a lift of 128kg late in the afternoon beating his Selangor opponent who also lifted 128 kg but Callixtus took the gold due to his lower body weight.

The 20-year-old was earlier also expected to deliver another gold in the snatch but failed in his three attempts.

Two other lifters saw action on the same day but failed to deliver with Ronny Jesos and Velerick Martin both in the 50kg,

Taekwondo which failed to produce any medals on the first three days of competition finally delivered one silver through Cristina Clara in the finweight class after losing to her Sarawak opponent 11-5 in the final.

Earlier, Mahyuddin Makladin, a gold medal prospect failed in the semifinal stage, losing 9-12 to a Perlis exponent and had to settle for bronze instead.

With the silver and bronze won, the taekwondo team has failed in their mission to deliver the targeted two gold medals for the contingent.

Meanwhile in tennis, the Sabah men and women team opened their campaign on losing notes losing 1-2 to Sarawak and Terengganu respectively.

In hockey, the women team lost to Terengganu 3-0 while the men team won 5-2 against Kelantan.

In Sibu, the badminton team lost 1-4 to Sarawak while the volleyball team also suffered the same fate losing to Johor 3-0.

Meanwhile, the Sabah football team must not repeat the same mistakes as they did against Pahang in their opening match if they are to advance to the next round, said coach Justin Ganai.

"I hope the players will not repeat the same errors as on Thursday. We conceded four goals that should not have happened and we were lucky to hold Pahang in the end," he said on Friday.

He reckoned the departure of first choice right back Zaki Sapri in the 37th minute through injury after a heavy tackle was the main cause for letting in three soft goals.

"His withdrawal affected our pace and he may not be featured again tomorrow.

Furthermore, a few other first team players also suffered some knocks and I hope the players who are given the task will rise to the occasion tomorrow."

Sabah only need a draw in Saturday's match against Kedah to advance to the next round.

A win will see them top the group while Kedah will need only a win to go to the next round.

The match will be played at the State Stadium in Kuching starting at 8am.
