Kuching: Sarawak, a state rich in natural treasures and a multitude of cultures, has now turned into a battleground for young athletes to battle among themselves throughout the period of the 18th edition of the Malaysia Games (Sukma) taking place.

Although the official opening ceremony would only be today (Saturday), the athletes had already started their campaigns since last Tuesday.

The games had become the best platform for young athletes nationwide to enrol into the junior programme and subsequently become a proud national athlete, carrying Malaysia's name and elevate it in the world.

With the crowd of 6,000 athletes including Brunei as invited contingent, it had surely provided more space for the Malaysian Youth and Sports Ministry, especially the National Sports Council to handpick new talents for the nation's sports.

The last time Sarawak hosted the biennial games was 26 years ago in 1990, in which they had emerged as the overall champion.

They had also emerged as overall champion for the subsequent two years in 1992 in Johor as well as 1994 in Perak.

With their 'Agi Hidup Agi Ngelaban' (Fight as long as they live) motto, the contingent targeted to grab 60 gold medals this time around.

As host state for the games, close to RM400 million was spent by the state government to build new facilities including the centres for aquatic, lawn bowl, shooting, squash and hockey. The Sarawak Stadium was also overhauled.

Kuching and Samarahan would see 19 types of sports being contested, Sibu (badminton and volleyball), while Miri (karate, sepak takraw and sailing).

Other than the host state's contingent, focus needed also to be given to the contingent from Federal Territories who came with a passion to retain their title as the defending champion.

As of Thursday, the contingent known as the 'Wipers' had already bagged 10 golds, seven silvers and four bronzes. – Bernama
