Kota Kinabalu: A 43-year-old local man who raped and fathered a child with his teenage daughter was sentenced 22 years' jail here Friday.Sessions Court Judge Ainul Shahrin Mohamad also handed 15 strokes of the cane to the man after he admitted his offence.The man raped the 16-year-old girl at a house in Tamparuli at the end of May two years ago.

He committed the offence under Section 376(3) of the Penal Code which provides for a jail term of between eight years and 30 years, and whipping, on conviction.In his mitigation, the man who was not represented asked for a light sentence and that he would be given a chance to meet his children before being taken to prison.
However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Akmazatul Mohamed Nawi demanded a heavy sentence on the grounds that the man had committed a heinous crime against his own daughter.The court heard that the incident came to light when a teacher took her to hospital after noticing a change in the girl's physique.

The hospital confirmed her pregnancy.
