Kuala Lumpur: Malaysian squash queen Datuk Nicol David has set her sights on regaining her world number one spot this season. The former world number one, currently ranked fourth in the world, moved to the top of the ranking in August 2006 and retained the spot for an unprecedented nine years (109-months) before losing it in September 2015.

"For now, I am only focusing on my training and building my pace so that I can sustain my performance and be consistent.

I admit that I was not consistent last year.

"That is why it is very important to get into shape by putting in additional training because everybody will be out to be on top of the world," said the 32-year-old Penangite when attending the Squash Racquets Association of Malaysia's (Sram) press conference for the Women's Squash Invitational 2016 at the National Squash Centre in Bukit Jalil, here Tuesday.

The event is part of SRAM's programme for top national players before the start of the new squash season (2016-2017).

The Women's Squash Invitational 2016 will be held from Wednesday till July 31 at the Bukit Jalil National Squash Centre.

Also participating are world number eight Omneya Abdel Kawy of Egypt, Joelle King of New Zealand (number 9), Joshna Chinappa of India (number 10) and former world number two Jenny Duncalf of England.

Nicol said she was also looking forward to the first season tournament at the Hong Kong Open Championship which is scheduled in August.

"My goal is purely the performance. I just want to see how my performance improves in each tournament.

After this week, I will go to Australia for two weeks of training and also compete in an exhibition match in Australia.

"I'll be back (to Malaysia) a few days before the Hong Kong Open," she said. – Bernama
