Punching and slapping wife: Father of 7 jailed

Kota Kinabalu: A 39-year-old soldier was on Tuesday sentenced to a year's jail for punching and slapping his wife with whom he has seven children.Magistrate Cindy Mc Juce Balitus handed the sentence to Corporal Amat Rahmat after he pleaded guilty to assaulting his wife at 9pm on June 1, this year inside a car parked in Jalan Mengkabong, Tuaran.
The offence under Section 323 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to two years or fine of up to RM2,000, or both, on conviction.
ADVERTISEMENT Balitus ordered Amat to serve the jail sentence from Tuesday.
The court heard that Amat had punched the woman's eyes, head and shoulder as well as slapped her several times.
Investigation revealed that the incident happened because Amat was believed to have been involved in drug abuse and alcohol consumption.
The woman suffered bruises to her eyes, head and shoulder.
ADVERTISEMENT In asking for a light sentence, Amat, who was not represented, told the court that he has children to look after.
Amat also hoped the court would give him a chance to mend his ways as according to him, following the incident he and his wife remained good to each other.

However, Prosecuting Officer Inspector Isfandiar Jasdi urged the court to impose a maximum sentence on the grounds that it was a case of domestic violence.
Meanwhile, two men claimed trial to stealing a spare tyre belonging to a man.
Shidih Saibin and Fauzi Abdul Amrin are accused of committing the offence at 9pm on April 7, this year by the roadside in Anjung Selera, Tanjung Lipat, Likas.
Balitus fixed Aug 18 for case management and released them on a bail of RM2,300 in two local sureties each.
Counsel Goldam Hamid defended the duo.
In another case, a 24-year-old man was charged with trespassing a premises.
Rizuan Abdullah pleaded not guilty to breaking into the premises at 1pm on July 11, this year in Tanjung Lipat, here.
His case would be re-mentioned on Aug 16 and no bail was offered to him.
