Man charged with flashing genitals at UMS student

Kota Kinabalu: A 27-year-old man was charged in the Magistrate's Court here with flashing his genitals at a university student last year.Mohamed Qayyum Tahir, who appeared before Magistrate Jessica Ombou Kakayun, pleaded not guilty to doing so with intention to insult the modesty of the 23-year-old woman on the ground floor of the Universiti Malaysia Sabah library at 11am on April 4.

The court set Aug 15 for case management and released Qayyum on a bail of RM2,800 in two sureties.

Earlier, Inspector Azaman Hamat, prosecuting, proposed bail at RM5,000 but Qayyum requested for a lower sum, saying he had just married and that his wife is currently three months pregnant.

The offence under Section 509 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to five years or fine, or both, on conviction.

Meanwhile, another man was sentenced to 12 months' jail for stealing a car bumper.

Mohd Hazirul Mohammad admitted to stealing the component at 6.30pm on July 21 in front of the Steven Motor premises in Manggatal.

He was charged under Section 379A of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of between one year and seven years and liability of whipping on conviction.

In the same court, 22-year-old Noor Hafizan Zaini was fined RM1,200 or two weeks' jail for rioting.

Hafizan pleaded guilty to committing the offence along with four accomplices still at large in front of a restaurant in the 1Borneo Hypermall at 3.30pm on July 16.

The offence under Section 147 of the Penal Code provides for a jail term of up to two years or fine or both on conviction.
