Chinese Consulate mulls aid for cultural events

Kota Kinabalu: The Chinese Consulate here will consider funding the annual Chinese New Year Dragon, Unicorn and Lion Dance Festival and Cultural Village Exhibition. Consul General Chen Peijie said this during a courtesy call by the United Sabah Chinese Communities Association Kota Kinabalu (USCCAKK) led by its President Datuk Susan Wong.Chen praised the Sabah Chinese community for being passionate on promoting and developing Chinese culture, adding that USCCAKK has been doing a good job on organising such events.

More than 90 Unicorn, Dragon and Lion Dance troupes take part in the event as well as 15 associations under the USCCAKK, featuring the traditions and customs of the different Chinese clans such as costumes, cuisine, tea tasting, dances and musical play, cultural entertainment, Chinese calligraphy and many more, attracting tens of thousands of visitors.

Chen said they would like to focus on the two major Chinese cultural events being held here, namely, the dragon boat race and the dragon, unicorn and lion dance festival, adding that it is not only meaningful but also a core value of Chinese culture.

She said if there is a need for assistance, the Chinese Consulate would support or fund it within their means, adding that USCCAKK was encouraged to write in officially on the matter.

Meanwhile, Chen pledged to arrange for more quota of business or cultural tours to China for associations like USCCAKK.

"We are the bridge of the China government and the Chinese in Sabah and we shall do our best to create a win-win situation so everyone benefits."

Chen also accepted the invitation to attend and to give a speech at the USCCAKK installation ceremony cum 40th anniversary celebration on Aug 7 at Hakka Portview Palace Hall.

Meanwhile, TP Group Executive Chairman Datuk Paul Lim also accepted his appointment as honorary advisor to USCCAKK.
