Another diphtheria case in Sabah involving girl, 6
PETALING JAYA: Another diphtheria case involving a six-year-old child has been reported in Sabah.Health Ministry Director-General Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the Sabah State Health Department had reported the new case on Tuesday. "The child is now treated at the intensive care unit.

"The child has received antitoxin treatment and is still given antibiotics," he said in a statement, Wednesday.

Dr Hisham said the child, who is a Malaysian girl, had received three main immunisation doses but missed out on the additional dose at 18 months," he said.

The child had fever, cough and cold on July 11 and was warded at the Likas Women and Children Hospital on July 17.

Culture swab from the child's throat showed Corynebacterium diphtheria positive, he said.

With the new case, the number of diphtheria cases have increased to 25 including five deaths with Kedah recording eight cases with one death, Sabah, five with three deaths, Malacca, three with one death, Negri Sembilan (7) and Penang (2).

Dr Hisham said that it was important for children below seven to be given the complete five-series immunisation to avoid getting diphtheria and its complications.

"Parents should check their children's immunisation status again and get them immunised if they have not done so or have not completed the doses," he said.
