Kota Kinabalu: Sabah's sole MCA Assemblyman Hiew King Cheu said it will be more appropriate under the current circumstances for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to let go the Finance portfolio. Hiew said Datuk Seri Najib Razak should consider appointing someone suitable and qualified to be the Finance Minister.

"Doing so will bring along independency at work, reduce any tendency of power abuse, achieve more transparency, and bring about higher credibility for the Finance Ministry," said the Luyang Assemblyman.

Most importantly, he said, giving up the finance post would allow Najib to concentrate on his duty as the Prime Minister and to formulate effective future plans to benefit the country.

He added that the current situation in the country does not look very good with constant attacks and accusations levelled against the Government by the opposition, especially the 1MDB case being investigated abroad.

The impact and damage to the country would be immense, he said.

"In the past since the formation of Malaysia, the finance portfolio was always held by someone else, and not the Prime Minister until the time of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

"When then Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was removed, Mahathir took over the finance portfolio and that trend continued during Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and now Najib," he said.

Hiew said that in major countries, the finance portfolio is always handled by different people other than the prime minister or president.

"Being a person who loves Malaysia so much, I would like to see Malaysia respected by the international communities.

At the same time, we must move forward towards prosperity with peace and harmony.

"In order to do this, there must be a strong political will and full commitment from the leaders," he said.
